Useful information if you are thinking about developing your property, or possibly buying a property depending on whether you can extend it.

Pre-purchase advice

Unfortunately, we are not able to give specific advice if you are thinking of buying a property on the condition that you can extend/change it in some way.  You can find links to general advice below which should help.

Do I need planning permission?

Are you thinking about altering or extending your property?  In certain circumstances you can carry out some forms of extensions and alterations without needing to make an application for planning permission. Find out more about planning permission.

View planning policies relating to a property

You may also find it useful to see what planning policies relate to the property and planning applications that have been approved or refused in the past.

Our Interactive Proposals Map will provide details of the relevant planning polices.  For example, if the property is in a Conservation Area or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  You can find out more about what these actually mean.

Our Interactive Histories Map will tell you what planning applications we have received in the past and whether we approved or refused them.  This may provide a guide of what may or may not be acceptable.

Use the South Oxfordshire Local Search This link will take you to an external website... to find information about council services in the area, such as the planning application history on a property. Search by postcode or town/village.

However, if you would like a definite `yes or no- as to whether your development is acceptable, you will have to submit a planning application.
